2nd CoopStar Workshop in Rabat: Advancing Sustainable Cooperatives in Africa

2nd CoopStar Workshop in Rabat: Advancing Sustainable Cooperatives Across Africa

The Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social and Solidarity Economy, the Office of Cooperation Development (ODCO), and the International Cooperative Alliance and its African regional office held the second CoopStar (Cooperatives for a Sustainable Transformation in Africa) workshop in Rabat, Morocco, from May 26 to 28, 2024. This event, dedicated to finalizing the book chapters on the role of cooperatives in the transition towards a circular, green, and sustainable economy, focused on the sustainable transformation of cooperatives in Africa. The workshop also aimed to explore new strategies, share best practices, and build sustainable networks for the development of cooperatives across Africa.

CoopStar is a collaborative initiative resulting from extensive cooperative action research, network building, and intensive interaction among key stakeholders, including the African cooperative movement, the ICA and its African regional office, the International Labour Organisation, and international cooperative partners such as the Korean Federation of Community Credit Cooperatives (KFCC) and the Belgian Raiffeisen Fund (Cera/BRS). The project aims to empower cooperatives across Africa to lead in sustainable economic transformation.

In December 2023, an initial scoping study workshop with experts from 17 African countries was conducted in Nairobi, laying the groundwork for the book project with preliminary country reports being presented and discussed. This second workshop brought together cooperative experts from at least 15 African countries, with the main agenda of finalizing national book chapters.
